Getting Unstuck With Nobody To Pull You
Most recovery advice assumes a second vehicle. Here is the sequence that works alone, in the order that costs the least effort, with the kit that makes each step possible.
Being stuck alone is a problem of method, not of strength. The mistake almost everybody makes is to start with the most dramatic tool available and work backwards. The correct approach is the opposite: begin with the cheapest action, and only escalate when it fails.
Step zero: stop and look
The moment forward progress stops, take your foot off. Every further second of wheelspin digs the vehicle deeper, melts the surface under the tyre in mud and buries the axles in sand. Get out and look underneath. You are answering one question: is the vehicle resting on its wheels or on its belly? A vehicle sitting on the chassis has no traction at all until it is lifted or dug out, and no amount of throttle will change that.
Step one: pressure
Air down. On sand, to 0.8 bar. On mud, moderately, because too soft a tyre in mud fills the tread and floats. This costs nothing, takes two minutes and resolves a surprising number of situations on its own.
Step two: dig and clear
Dig the sand or mud away from in front of each driven wheel, creating a ramp rather than a hole, and clear anything the chassis is resting on. Straighten the steering. In snow and sand, clear a path a metre long in the direction you intend to move, which should usually be backwards, into your own compacted tracks.
Recovery is a sequence, not a moment of inspiration. Work down the list and most situations resolve at step three.
Step three: traction boards
Push a board firmly under each driven wheel so the leading edge is trapped under the tyre, not simply lying in front of it. Drive out slowly, in the highest gear that will pull, with as little wheelspin as you can manage. Spinning on a plastic board melts teeth off it and achieves nothing. Once moving, keep moving to firm ground.
This is where the great majority of solo recoveries end. Two boards, a shovel and twenty minutes solve almost everything short of a vehicle resting on its axles in clay.
Step four: the jack
A high lift jack or a bottle jack with a wide base lets you raise a wheel and fill underneath it with rock, wood or a board, which converts an unreachable hole into a step. High lift jacks are also the most dangerous tool most travellers carry: they are unstable, the handle stores enormous energy, and they require a solid jacking point that many modern vehicles simply do not have. Learn to use one in a car park before you need one in a rut, keep your face out of the arc of the handle, and never get under a vehicle held up by one.
Step five: the winch
A winch is the tool for the situation that the shovel and boards cannot solve: a steep exit, a vehicle resting on its chassis, a bogging where there is simply nothing to drive on. It needs an anchor, which is the part people forget. In forest, a tree with a proper wide tree protector strap. In open desert, a ground anchor, a buried spare wheel or a sand anchor, all of which take time and digging. A winch without an anchor is decoration.
Winching safety is not optional. Use a dampener over the line, keep everybody out of the line of pull on both sides, use a snatch block to double the pull and change the angle rather than winching at a diagonal, and never wrap a synthetic line around a tree directly. Synthetic rope is far safer than steel cable when it fails and much easier to handle, which is why it has become standard.
Kinetic ropes are for two vehicles
A kinetic recovery rope stretches and releases energy, which pulls a stuck vehicle out gently rather than with a jerk. It is the best tool available when there is a second vehicle, and useless alone. If you use one, attach it to rated recovery points on both vehicles, never to a tow ball, never to a tie-down eye, and never with a steel shackle if a soft shackle is available. Recovery equipment that comes loose under load becomes a projectile that goes through a windscreen.
The kit that makes it possible
Two traction boards, a proper long-handled shovel, a compressor, a deflator, a pair of gloves, two soft shackles, a tree protector, a snatch block and either a winch or a very good reason not to have one. For a motorcycle, replace all of it with a small folding shovel, a length of strap, the willingness to unload the bike and the knowledge that lifting a loaded bike alone is a technique you can practise at home. Both lists fit the same principle: carry what you have used before, not what looks impressive.

Winch or traction boards first?
Boards, every time. They are faster, safer, need no anchor and solve the majority of situations. The winch is for what remains.
Are cheap traction boards worth it?
The very cheap ones snap or melt under wheelspin. Mid-price boards from a known maker are fine and last for years if you drive onto them rather than spinning on them.
Can I recover a vehicle with a tow strap and a running start?
No. Snatching with a non-elastic strap and a run-up puts shock loads through both vehicles and is how bumpers, chassis mounts and recovery points get torn off. Use a kinetic rope designed for it, and rated recovery points at both ends.
