Sand Rewards Patience and Punishes Power
Nearly every vehicle that gets stuck in sand was driven by somebody who applied more throttle. Here is what works instead, and the one number that matters most.
Sand is honest. It does not hide a rock under the surface or turn to grease when it rains. It simply resists, in proportion to how deeply your tyres sink, and it will let you drive across a hundred kilometres of it as long as you accept its terms. The terms are lower pressure, steady speed and a light foot.
Pressure is everything
A tyre at road pressure has a small, round contact patch that digs. The same tyre at 1.2 bar has a long, flat contact patch that floats. The footprint can double, which halves the pressure on the sand and roughly halves the sinking. No other change you can make to a vehicle has this effect, which is why airing down is not a technique but a precondition.
Numbers, for a standard travel vehicle on standard all terrain tyres: firm beach sand 1.6 to 1.8 bar, general soft sand 1.2 to 1.4, deep dune sand or when you are already struggling 0.8 to 1.0. Below 0.8 the tyre can unseat from the rim in a turn, so treat that as the floor unless you run beadlocks. Reduce speed as you reduce pressure, because a soft tyre generates heat and a soft tyre hitting something hard at speed is how sidewalls die.
Air back up before you return to a road. Not at the next town, at the edge of the sand. Sustained tarmac speed on a soft tyre destroys it from the inside and the failure comes without warning.
Momentum, gently applied
In sand you need enough speed to keep the vehicle on top of the surface rather than ploughing through it, and no more. That usually means a higher gear than instinct suggests, held at constant throttle. High range with a locked or manual selection often works better than low range, because low range invites the wheels to spin, and a spinning wheel in sand digs its own grave in about two seconds.
When the vehicle begins to bog, the correct response is to ease off, not to press harder. Straighten the steering, because turned wheels act as ploughs, then either continue gently or stop and reverse back down your own tracks, which are the only compacted sand available. Trying to power through with the front wheels turned is the single most common way a trip stops.
Sand is the one surface where the answer to being stuck is almost never more power. It is always less pressure.
Dunes are a different discipline
Crossing dune country adds a hazard that flat sand does not have: you cannot see over the crest, and the far side may be a vertical slip face. Approach every crest at an angle you can abort, slow enough that you could stop at the top, and never fly over it. Where a group travels together, one person walks the crest first. This is not caution, it is the difference between a photograph and a rollover.
Climbing a dune, commit early and keep the line straight up the fall line. If you fail to reach the top, do not turn on the slope. Reverse straight back down in your own tracks, which are now compacted, and take a second run with more speed and the same line.
Getting out
If you are properly bogged, the sequence is quick and unglamorous. Drop pressure further, to 0.8 bar. Dig the sand from in front of all four wheels, not just the ones you think are stuck, and clear the belly if the chassis is resting. Lay traction boards under the driven wheels, firmly, with the leading edge under the tyre. Then drive out slowly in a high gear, without wheelspin, and do not stop until you are on firm ground, which means somebody has to collect the boards and walk.
Two people, twenty minutes. It is genuinely routine. What turns it into an afternoon is spinning the wheels first, which buries the axles and often the differentials, and then trying to tow a buried vehicle with a strap, which usually breaks something on one of the two vehicles.
Heat, the invisible hazard
Sand work is slow, hot and hard on cooling systems. Watch temperatures on long climbs, keep the radiator clear of the fine dust that packs into it, and stop before the gauge tells you to. Your own cooling matters just as much: digging in forty degrees empties a person faster than any other activity in this magazine, which is why the water calculation in the tools section assumes far more than most people carry.
Questions we get asked
What pressure is too low?
Below 0.8 bar on a standard rim, a hard turn or a sharp obstacle can unseat the bead. If you have to go lower to move, go lower, then reinflate as soon as you are on firmer ground and drive very gently in the meantime.
High range or low range in sand?
High range for open sand at a steady speed, low range for slow technical work such as climbing out of a wadi or crawling in soft dunes. The consistent factor is avoiding wheelspin, whichever range gives you that.
Do I need traction boards?
For sand travel, yes. They are the fastest self-recovery available, they work solo, and they double as a base for a jack. Two are enough for most vehicles; four are better for deep dune work.
