Reading the Ground Before You Drive It
Every surface tells you what it will do under a tyre. Learning to read it, fifty metres ahead, is the skill that separates a driver from somebody steering.
Watch an experienced driver on a difficult track and the striking thing is how little drama there is. The vehicle moves slowly, the engine note barely changes, the wheels rarely spin. What you are seeing is not car control. It is reading: a continuous assessment of what the ground will do, made far enough ahead that the actual driving is almost boring.
Grip is a guess, so make it a good one
Every surface offers a coefficient of friction, and you will never know the number. What you can know is the family it belongs to. Dry rock and hard-packed gravel give you almost tarmac levels of grip and punish only through impact. Wet clay and grass on a slope give you less grip than ice and punish through sliding. Sand gives you moderate grip and punishes through resistance, which is why it demands momentum rather than torque. Fresh mud lies somewhere between clay and sand depending entirely on what is underneath it, which is why the only useful mud rule is to find out what is underneath it.
Grade each surface by what happens when a wheel starts to slip. On rock, nothing much: it grips again. On clay, everything: the vehicle continues in the direction it was already sliding. That single question tells you whether to use throttle to solve a problem or to remove it entirely.
Weight is the other half of traction
Traction is grip multiplied by the load on the tyre. This is why a vehicle that climbs a slope easily can fail on the same slope while braking, and why cresting a rise with the throttle open lifts the front and takes the steering with it. Every input you make moves weight. Braking loads the front, accelerating loads the rear, and turning loads the outside wheels.
Use it deliberately. On a loose climb, gentle steady throttle keeps weight on the driven wheels that need it. On a descent, engine braking in low range distributes retardation to all four wheels instead of asking the front two to do the work while unloaded. In a cross-axle situation, where a diagonal pair of wheels is lifting, a small amount of momentum carried in from before the obstacle is worth more than any amount of throttle applied on it.
The line is chosen fifty metres before the obstacle. On it, you are only executing a decision you already made.
Choosing the line
A line is a plan for where each wheel will be, not where the bonnet will point. Beginners steer the vehicle; experienced drivers place the tyres. In ruts, that means deciding early whether to straddle them, drive in them or drive one wheel up on the crown, and committing before the steering gets vague. On rock, it means putting a tyre on the obstacle rather than between obstacles, because a wheel on top of a rock has clearance underneath and a wheel beside it has a differential in the way.
Look where you want to go and look far. The eyes lead the hands more reliably offroad than anywhere else, because the corrections are slow and constant. If you are staring at the rock you are afraid of, you will drive into it.
When to get out
Walk anything you cannot see the end of. This is the single most reliable habit in offroad driving and the one most often skipped when a group is watching. Walking a section takes three minutes and tells you the depth of the rut, whether the surface under the water is rock or silt, where the ground falls away, and whether the exit is possible at all. Recovering a vehicle that entered blind takes an hour on a good day.
Water is the absolute case. Never drive into water you have not walked, unless it is obviously shallow, clear and moving over visible stone. Depth is only half the question. The other half is what the bottom is made of, whether there is a step at the exit, and how fast it is running: thirty centimetres of fast water pushes harder than a metre of still.
The gearbox is a decision, not a reaction
Select low range before you need it, at the bottom of the climb and the top of the descent, on level ground where the transfer case will engage without protest. Changing gear halfway up a loose slope loses the momentum you were relying on and often the attempt with it. Pick the gear that lets you complete the whole obstacle without shifting, and accept the engine sounding busier than it would on a road.
Practise where it costs nothing
The techniques above are all learnable in an afternoon on a gentle gravel track with somebody watching, and none of them are learnable by reading. Find a legal area, a shallow slope and a friend, and spend a day driving the same fifty metres badly and then well. The difference in confidence when you meet the real thing, two thousand kilometres from home with a loaded vehicle, is out of all proportion to the effort.
Questions we get asked
Is momentum good or bad?
Both, depending on the surface. In sand and light mud it carries you through resistance that torque alone cannot overcome. On rock and in ruts it turns a controlled manoeuvre into an impact. The rule is as slow as possible, as fast as necessary, decided before you enter.
Should I switch off traction control?
On most modern vehicles, no. Modern systems brake spinning wheels quickly enough to work as an electronic differential lock and generally help. The exception is deep sand, where intervention cuts the throttle at exactly the wrong moment, which is why most manufacturers offer a sand mode that relaxes it.
How do I know if a slope is too steep?
If you cannot walk up it comfortably, do not drive up it. If you cannot see the ground at the top from the driver seat while stationary at the bottom, walk it first. Descending, if you would not be happy to stop halfway and restart, choose another way.
