Archetype
The Expeditionist
You plan the trip twice and enjoy both.
The environment sets the rules and you respect them: fuel calculated, water doubled, turnaround points agreed in writing before departure. The margin is designed rather than hoped for.
You are the person everybody wants in the second vehicle. Your risk is planning that becomes its own hobby, and a tendency to prepare for the trip you are not yet taking instead of leaving on the one you are.
Strengths
- Rigorous with numbers: fuel, water, days, weight
- Good judgement under pressure because the decision was made in advance
- Takes communication and rescue planning seriously
Watch for
- Analysis that delays departure by a year
- Overpacking against improbable scenarios
- Choosing partners who do not plan to the same standard
Kit
- A satellite messenger with a scheduled check-in
- Separated water storage and real filtration
- Written fuel, water and turnaround figures on the dashboard
- Vehicle
- A large, well-supported four wheel drive or a light expedition truck, built for autonomy and range rather than for technical extremes.
- First trip
- A short desert crossing on an established route with a second vehicle, run exactly as you would run a long one.
