The Basecamp Builder

You go far enough, and then you stay.

One good place, a camp set up properly, a fire in the evening and days spent exploring from it. Comfort is not a compromise here, it is the objective.

You travel with people who are not obsessed with vehicles, often including children, and you make the outdoors welcoming for them. Your risk is a camp so elaborate that moving it becomes a reason not to.

Strengths

  • Makes the outdoors accessible to people who would not otherwise come
  • Camp craft: shelter, cooking, comfort, and doing it early
  • Relaxed pace, which is the most underrated travel skill there is

Watch for

  • A camp that takes two hours to build and two to strike
  • Choosing sites for facilities rather than for the place
  • Weight, because comfort items are heavy and numerous

Kit

  • An awning that goes up alone in two minutes
  • A kitchen box packed so that it works without unpacking
  • Lighting that makes an evening pleasant rather than functional
Vehicle
A comfortable four wheel drive, van or trailer with an awning, good chairs, a fridge and a kitchen that works in the dark.
First trip
Four nights in one place a long way down a forest road, with day trips on foot from camp.
