Paper, Phone, Satellite
Three layers, each of which fails in a different way. Build the stack properly and you will never be truly lost; rely on one of them and eventually you will be.
Modern navigation is so good that it has produced a new kind of traveller: one who has never been lost and has therefore never developed the habits that prevent it. The stack below is not about distrusting technology. It is about arranging things so that no single failure, a dead battery, a dropped phone, a corrupted map file, has consequences.
Layer one: the phone
A phone with a proper offline mapping application is the most capable navigation tool most people have ever owned, and the important word is offline. Download the map data for the whole region before departure, not the route, because routes change. Learn the application well enough to create waypoints, record a track and read a topographic map on it.
Its failure modes are heat, water, battery and breakage, which is why it lives in a rugged mount out of direct sun, on a charger, with a second phone or a spare battery in the vehicle. In hot climates a phone in a windscreen mount will shut down from heat by mid-morning, which is a discovery every traveller makes exactly once.
Layer two: a dedicated device
A handheld GPS or a vehicle navigation unit with topographic mapping, its own battery, and buttons that work with gloves and in rain. Its virtue is independence: different batteries, different software, different failure mode. It is also what you take when you walk away from the vehicle, which is the moment navigation stops being a convenience.
Whichever device you use, record the track continuously. Your own track is the single most valuable navigational asset in a remote emergency, because it is a proven, driveable route back to fuel, water and people.
Redundancy in navigation is not three devices. It is three different ways of failing.
Layer three: paper
Paper does not run out of battery, does not shatter and shows the whole region at once, which is exactly what you need when the plan changes. Carry maps at a scale that shows the escape routes: the towns, the main roads, the rivers, the passes. For most overland travel that is a regional map at 1:500,000 or so, plus more detailed sheets for any area you intend to travel off-track.
Learn to take a bearing with a compass and to orient the map. It takes an hour to learn and it is the layer that works when everything electronic is in a puddle. Mark your route on the paper as you go, with a pencil, once a day. It takes two minutes and it means the paper is always current.
The communication layer
Navigation and communication overlap where it matters most. A satellite messenger with two-way text and a scheduled daily check-in does three things: it tells somebody at home you are fine, it lets you get advice or arrange help without triggering a full rescue, and it has an emergency function as a last resort. For any travel beyond mobile coverage, it is the piece of equipment with the highest value per gram.
Leave a route plan with somebody at home. Vehicle description, registration, party names, intended route, check-in schedule and the date and time at which they should raise an alarm and whom to call. This costs nothing and is the difference between a search that begins on the right day in the right place and one that begins a week late over an enormous area.
Waypoints and the habit of marking
Mark the things that matter as you pass them, not later: the last fuel, the last reliable water, the junction where the track split, the place you would turn around. On a long track these accumulate into a personal map far more useful than any published one, and they are what you hand to the next traveller who asks.

Which offline map data is best?
For most of the world, open-data based topographic maps are excellent and free, with a paid application that handles downloads and track recording well. In some regions, commercial map sets and locally produced tracks are much better and worth buying.
Do I need a satellite phone?
A two-way messenger covers the great majority of needs at a fraction of the cost and weight. A satellite phone earns its place when you may need a long conversation, coordinate a rescue or work remotely from genuine wilderness.
Are paper maps really necessary?
For remote travel, yes, and they are the layer people skip. They also do something no screen does: they show you the whole region at once, which is how you notice the alternative route you did not know existed.
